ABOUT
CERI
History
In December of 2001, Nancy Cooke and Steven Shope proposed the
establishment of an independent, not-for-profit research institute
focused on studying, understanding, and developing solutions for
problems that occur in complex, distributed socio-technical systems.
The institute would connect diverse bodies of research and
technological expertise.
CERI moved to the current location in
December of 2004. Since then, the scope of research has grown
significantly. CERI participates in many activities that are
complimentary to the laboratory research being conducted, having
hosted numerous workshops focused on real world problems. Most
recently, CERI hosted the 4th in a series of workshops focused on
the ‘Human Factors of UAVs’.
Partners
CERI is an independent, not-for-profit research institute. Part of
CERI’s mission is to conduct collaborative research with for-profit
business and industry, academic institutions, and government
entities. CERI has several active Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)
with entities such as the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and Arizona
State University (ASU).
One benefit to partnering with private
industry is that it allows CERI to compete in the Federal Government
Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program. STTR
participation requires a small for-profit business to partner with
not-for-profit organizations, like CERI.
CERI works most closely with ASU on
research collaborations, offering research assistant positions for
graduate and undergraduate students who attend ASU. These students
obtain valuable research experience while receiving funding to help
pay for school.
CERI also works closely with
government entities. One example is the Cooperative Research and
Development Agreement (CRADA) that CERI has with the Air Force
Research Lab (AFRL). This partnership has been a valuable tool in
developing cutting edge technologies.

Institutional Review Board
In 2007, CERI formed its own IRB to ensure the ethical treatment of
human participants. To obtain the Federalwide Assurance number for
